We make a list of the Top Ten Most Anticipated MMOs of 2010 we’re excited for. You might see some games on here that might not actually release in 2010, but we’re going to be including them here for fitting our criteria. For our list, our criteria are that the game must either release this year or go into beta, which we feel accounts for all the games on our list.
1. Star Wars: The Old Republic
It was wished for and was rumored for a long time, but Bioware is officially entering into the MMO market with Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game’s take on the MMO format, but with Star Wars enhanced tweaks, is great, but what’s really impressed me so far is their focus on story. Instead of being a panel of text meant to help you gain experience and a level, The Old Republic is instead focusing on an actual story where you make important decisions that affect what happens.
Leveling alts is always a chore, but with an increased focus on story and the paths a character takes, taking those alts through the game might just be easier with Bioware at the helm. The game won’t be out till 2011 at best, but beta should be starting in 2010, so it only seems natural to include the game on the list.
2. Allods Online
Beyond one other exception, you’ll find that this article is lacking in the area of free-to-play MMOs. While there are a number coming out this year, it’s somewhat of a “been there done that” for many of them. There are some good ones out there, but when weighed against the merits of subscription-based games, they generally pale in comparison. Not so, however, when it comes to Allods Online. Fans of World of Warcraft will find the world and gameplay instantly familiar, but by no means does that mean this game is a clone. I hate it when people say that about any game.
