We make a list of the Top Ten Most Anticipated MMOs of 2010 we’re excited for. You might see some games on here that might not actually release in 2010, but we’re going to be including them here for fitting our criteria. For our list, our criteria are that the game must either release this year or go into beta, which we feel accounts for all the games on our list.
1. Star Wars: The Old Republic
It was wished for and was rumored for a long time, but Bioware is officially entering into the MMO market with Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game’s take on the MMO format, but with Star Wars enhanced tweaks, is great, but what’s really impressed me so far is their focus on story. Instead of being a panel of text meant to help you gain experience and a level, The Old Republic is instead focusing on an actual story where you make important decisions that affect what happens.
Leveling alts is always a chore, but with an increased focus on story and the paths a character takes, taking those alts through the game might just be easier with Bioware at the helm. The game won’t be out till 2011 at best, but beta should be starting in 2010, so it only seems natural to include the game on the list.
2. Allods Online
Beyond one other exception, you’ll find that this article is lacking in the area of free-to-play MMOs. While there are a number coming out this year, it’s somewhat of a “been there done that” for many of them. There are some good ones out there, but when weighed against the merits of subscription-based games, they generally pale in comparison. Not so, however, when it comes to Allods Online. Fans of World of Warcraft will find the world and gameplay instantly familiar, but by no means does that mean this game is a clone. I hate it when people say that about any game.
Combat felt somewhat slow during the opening few levels when I played the game in the beta, but that didn’t keep me from enjoying the heck out of the game. The game has some amazing graphics for a free-to-play game, there are a number of character classes, interesting races such as the Gibberlings (three characters working as one), and the game’s Astral Ships end-game sounds unlike anything else. I can’t wait for this game to be released.
3. Star Trek Online

Cryptic has really nailed down the Star Trek look and feel, ranging from the game’s launcher saying “Make It So” to being able to visit Deep Space Nine. The game’s ship combat is also unique, bordering somewhere between EVE Online and Pirates of the Burning Sea. It’s action packed, hectic, and requires a lot of strategy and nimble thinking. I’ve been playing the beta, so I know what’s coming, but still I can’t wait until I can play for keeps and not lose my earned experience.
4. Final Fantasy XIV
The first Final Fantasy MMO was a bit of an acquired taste. It was great being able to experience the world of Final Fantasy in an MMO format, but the adventure was a little too hardcore at times, gameplay systems weren’t perfect, and the game featured some notorious bosses that were beyond reason. With that said, however, it looks like Square Enix has learned from their mistakes, and that Final Fantasy XIV will be the great game that the original should’ve been in the first place.
Another reason why I’m anticipating the game is because it’s one of only a very select few MMOs that will appear on an actual console as well. Assuming you’ve got the keyboard or headset needed for a proper gaming experience, it’s considerably more relaxing to spend hours fighting monsters while sprawled on your couch than sitting at a desk. Whether you get the game for the PC or PS3, however, it’s looking like a winner.
5. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

While not technically a new game, the upcoming WOW expansion Cataclysm is something every fan is eagerly waiting forand something that even the haters have a hard time denying.
Flying mounts in Azeroth, a new secondary profession, PvP zones and rated Battlegrounds, a level cap increase (now 85), and much more.
The two most exciting new features, however, are the two new races Goblins (Horde) and Worgen (Alliance), and the fact that the expansion will actually change the landscape of the game.
Usually, once a world is created, it stays the same. When Cataclysm hits, however, the game will be rewriting the world and vastly changing the landscape of previous realms that fans have visited a number of times before. It’s one thing to add a new high-level area, but it’s a whole other ballgame to revisit existing places and making them feel fresh and unique.
By rewarding both long-time players and newcomers alike, it’s no wonder that World of Warcraft is the most popular MMO out there and looks to be hanging on to that title for a long time to come.
6. DC Universe Online
Though the genre isn’t as loaded with superhero based titles as fantasy based ones, do we really need yet another superhero based MMO when we already have City of Heroes and Champions Online? Ordinarily, no, but when you throw in the fact that it’s set within the DC Universe the first for the superhero MMO genre (be based on an existing property, that is) you suddenly have a reason to care and make room for a third competitor in the field. I’m more a Marvel guy myself, but I’m slowly growing more attached to DC Comics, WoW Gold, and I can’t wait until that day when my personal superhero jumps online and starts helping Superman overcome a disaster or working to thwart a truly maniacal villain such as The Joker. Of course, it also doesn’t hurt to have Marv Wolfman writing the story of the game a man who has been writing comics and creating characters since the 70s.
7. LEGO Universe
LEGO blocks have been around for a long time now, but the franchise has found greater popularity by transitioning into the realm of videogames.
LEGO Star Wars started it, but then came Indiana Jones, Batman, Rock Band, and Harry Potter is the next one to be getting the treatment. LEGOs will also be moving into the realm of MMOs very soon, however, when LEGO Universe is launched. Aion Kinah.
Though slightly more geared towards the younger sect of gamer, that still doesn’t stop the kid in me from jumping up and down with joy.
Imagine playing an MMO and being able to actually create things within the game world and then bring them to life that’s what will separate LEGO Universe from the crowd. Whether you’re young or young at heart, if you like LEGOs, you’ll definitely be playing this game when it comes out.
8. All Points Bulletin

When it comes to MMOs, there really aren’t any set within the real world and contain real world problems.
There’s always a new fantasy or sci-fi world to jump into, so why not something more grounded in reality? Along comes All Points Bulletin to alleviate that problem. In APB you choose to play as either the Criminals or Enforcers, so you’ll either be breaking the law or trying to uphold it when engaged in the game.
What’s intriguing about APB is its dual-natured quest system, Aion Gold, where the criminal players might be tasked with completing a job, while the enforcers are working to stop them.
It almost sounds like some of the open quest battles in Warhammer Online, but with more at stake and more overall interaction; a somewhat PvP system without being an exact PvP system. I have the funny feeling that everyone is going to want to be a criminal, but personally, I can’t wait to go all Judge Dredd on someone and say, “I am the law!”
9. Guild Wars 2

The original Guild Wars proved to be a hit, as gamers loved the idea of paying for a retail boxed high quality MMO, but without having to spend $15 a month in order to keep a subscription up. Instead, if you bought Guild Wars, you could play it from then into eternity without spending another dime. Unless something unexpected happens, expect Guild Wars 2 to follow the same format.
There hasn’t been a lot shown or talked about when it comes to this game, but there has been a sprinkling of information coming out every so often. A recent teaser trailer, however, WoW Gold are avalible in wowgold7th’s store.showed off a lot of the reasons as to why someone should be excited for the sequel.
New character classes, new character races, improved character and enemy models, more luxurious environments and effects. There was also talk of characters or traits from the first game carrying over at one-time, so that could be an intriguing thing to keep an eye out for as well.
10. WonderKing
Dragonica Online is one, but the other is number ten on our list WonderKing. The controls are fairly simple to get used to, but take some skill and practice if you want to unleash some devastating combos. There’s cooking, crafting, pets, mounts, and several character class tree progressions, and much more. It shouldn’t be long until the game is officially released, but until then you can go check the game out for yourself and dabble in the beta.
